Glorious History of Yamazaki Whisky 山崎
The history of Japanese whisky is centred among two of the most influential figures, Shinjiro Torii and Masataka Taketsuru. Torii was a pharmaceutical wholesaler and the founder of Kotobukiya (later to become Suntory). He started importing western liquor and he later created a brand called “Akadama Port Wine“, based on a Portuguese wine which made him a successful merchant..
Masataka Taketsuru worked as a distillery executive for Torii and during which times, Taketsuru learnt the art of distilling in Scotland, and brought this knowledge back to Japan in the early 1920s. Whilst working for Kotobukiya he played a key part in helping Torii establish the Yamazaki Distillery.
It was only In 1934 he left Kotobukiya to form his own company—Dainipponkaju—which would later change its name to Nikka. In this new venture he established the Yoichi distillery in Hokkaidō.
Whisky took a historical turn in Japan in 1923, when Suntory established the first official whisky distillery. However, the growth of Japanese whisky remain benign and domestic and even nose dive after the great bubble burst for the Japanese economy. Production were curtailed and very little was known about the brand until around the mid 2010s. Suddenly, Japanese whisky gained global recognition with many accolades of international awards, including Best Whisky in the World by the Whisky Bible. Since then, the demand of Yamazaki Whisky has gained meteoric rise to stardom as world whisky connoiseur loved the taste and marketing of Yamazaki whisky.
